What have you learnt about technologies from the process of contructing this product?
New media technology is technology that has come about in recent years and that has had impact on what media is produced and how it has been made. For example: When films were made with analogue they were stored on tapes and they were hard to edit as you had to do it by hand and this would have taken a long time. Also due to films only being able to be made analogue meant that it was not just anyone that could make a film, you had to have the right equipment and this was expensive. Also having analogue films meant that there were only certain ways that the films could be seen by the audiences, this was in the cinema by using realms that the tape would be played on and in the more recent years the films then were put on VHS so that people would able to watch film at home.
The ways that the change of technology has effected the making of film:
Due to new technologies the way that films are produced, distributed and exhibited have changed greatly. The way films have been produced has changes because of the fact that cameras have developed which had made the quality of film better and due to the fact that cheaper cameras are around now anyone has the option to make film if they want to, cameras can even be found on phones now. The way films are distributed has changed as well due to the fact that you do not have to be a big company to be able to advertise your film as you are able to advertise them using social media. This opens film making up to people that may have not be able to make them in the past. Exhibited films has also become easier and more affordable as there are now many different platforms that films can be on and they do not have to be seen in the cinema to get an audience as you are able to put your films on things like You Tube. Also these days to watch films in your own home you do not have to have VHS or a DVD as you can watch films through the internet. For example: Netflix or sky movies.
Synergy means to have lots of products under one title. For example: The Harry Potter franchise has video games, soundtracks, clothes and toys come out of it. Synergy also helps with the advertising of a film and the finding of an audience.
Also due to new technology synergy has been able to expand. For example: you can now have video games that are very realistic and that can be played on various of different platforms e.g. PlayStation, online or on tablets.
The advantages and disadvantages of these changes:
The advantage of new technologies for producers is that they make it easier for them to make their film, to advertise it and to exhibit their film. This has not only been made true for big producers but for those who are smaller as well and that may just be starting of. New technologies also allow better qualities for films and also makes it to connect with others.
The advantage for consumers is that new technologies makes it easier for them to watch the film where ever they are and that they did not have to go to the cinema or watch it at home. This is good for people that are very busy and to not spend much time at home or if they do not have much free to go to the cinema.
The disadvantage of new technologies is that they can be hard to use and that if you do not have the basic equipment to begin with it may be expensive to start of. Also due to bigger film companies taking advantage of this it may make it harder for those smaller independent companies to get an audience.
The disadvantage for consumers is that they may not have the right devices in which to watch the films on.
To make our thriller we had to use lots of different technologies for both research and actually making out thriller. Through convergence I was able to use my phone to use YouTube to watch existing thriller openings. This was useful as it made it easier to do research as you could watch the openings on the move and did not have to use the computer to do it. The disadvantage of this is that the screen on the phone is quite small and it may be hard to identify what skills are being used in the opening. E.g. the camera shot and angles.
The camera that we used to film the thriller was DSLR digital single lens reflex. This camera gave us a clear image that helped to make our thriller effective. The camera also allowed us get close up shots without the image becoming pixelated and you are clearly able to read the writing that is in the close ups.
Another form of technology that I used was final cut, this was to edit the thriller opening. The advantage of this was that it was easy to use and it made the opening look very clear. Also it was easy to take different sequences and to put it together. A disadvantage to this if you did not know what the technical terms meant it may have been difficult to use. Final cut was also useful as we were able to crop and cut the different clips to what we wanted. Also final cut allowed us to take the sound off or to changed the volume of the footage that we had. This enabled us to get rid of any background noise that there was in the footage so then we were able to add the music in. Final cut also had an effect that changed how the voices sounded. We used the one that gave a ghostly feel and somewhat un nerving feel to the voices. When you first see the bedroom in the opening scene with the posters on the wall the lighting was different from one shot to another due to the change in light coming through the window, to correct this we used the colour corrector which was on final cut and this allowed us to give the shot the same lighting as the others.
